I saw this cute idea on a friend's blog and decided to institute the button program in my house too. First I got the spice tins and my button jar at Linens and Things. The spice tins are perfect for plopping little buttons in and they are magnetic so they'll just stick right on the fridge. I got bags of buttons from Walmart for pretty cheap. I just printed out a picture of the boys and glued it in each of their button tins. Then I made a list of things that would earn them buttons: Cleaning their rooms, getting on their clothes, listening to mom and dad the first time, brushing and flossing teeth, doing their daily jobs, being good in the store, etc. etc. Then they also have their daily jobs which earn them a button. Noah is 2 so he had one harder job and one easier job a day such as: Help set the table for dinner & do a preschool page or Help do the dishes and sing ABCs and count to 10. Taivan is 5 so he could do a little more. His jobs include things like dusting the rooms downstairs, upstairs, vacuuming a room, help make dinner, and other things like write you name five times, practice some math problems, etc. (I also made my lists a little cuter by adding some fun papers and then got them all laminated and stuck magnets on the back). I also took a plastic crystal light container, filled it with colorful popsicle sticks that had extra jobs written on them. Extra jobs included: Help vacuum a room, clean the toy room, fill the snack bowl, take out the recycling, help with the trash, unload the dishwasher to things like give mom a hug and kiss, sing the ABCs, play outside for 10 minutes, read books for 10 minutes, color a picture, or do some exercises. For each extra job they do they get a button as well. (As a side note: It's also a great disciplining technique. Sometimes when they have done something wrong I explain to them that it was not a good choice and that it will cost them a button. I have them take one of their buttons and give them back to my button jar. This way they are learning they are responsible for their choices good and bad and the buttons mean something to them so they don't want to lose their buttons). Anyway, to the button prizes.... Our list of button prizes is as follows: For 10 buttons they can choose one of the following prizes- Extra glass of juice, extra snack, a cookie, a small candy, play nintendo for 10 minutes, get to watch an extra cartoon. For 15 buttons: A special toy (I picked up a bunch of $1.00 toys as Target), a candy (the snack sized little candy bars), get to watch a movie, get to stay up an extra 20 minutes before bed. For 25 buttons: Get to go to the zoo, get to go to McDonalds. (They don't usually make it to 25). Well, just thought I would share this great idea. It has been working well in our family and it's just sometimes nice to try something new!
